As the first module of the training, we begin with the notion of building our practice and understanding from the ground up. This thread is woven through the entire module: finding your foundation for teaching.
This module sets the foundation for the training with introductory Mindfulness background and practices. We also launch the Asana Labs where yoga poses are presented, explained and explored in fine detail. Building the foundation is also a feature of the Experiential Anatomy sessions which cover basic principles of anatomy and movement, the feet and ankles, plus the knees and legs. This module will also include an introduction to the 8 Limbs of Yoga, a bird’s-eye view of the history of yoga, and an introduction to the study of yoga philosophy.
Finally, we also include the opportunity to do group practices for beginning to develop confident and competent communication as a teacher.
In this second module the training, the focus is on establishing a familiarity with our centre, our inner balance.
Mindfulness practices continue to form a basis of our work, laying the groundwork for the development of awareness. The Asana Labs will continue with learning about the detail of the poses and experiencing them firsthand. With Experiential Anatomy, we will explore the pelvis, the vertebral column, and the shoulders. This module advances us along the path of the Art of Teaching by focusing on skills such as learning to observe alignment, and how to sequence a class.
As ever, we will balance theoretical learning with experiential learning through movement, individual study and group work. We will provide individual feedback through group teaching exercises to develop teaching skills.
The aim of this module is to begin the exploration of the subtle, in addition to our focus on the physical. Along with our continued mindfulness practices, we will include introductory practices of pranayama. Our progression from the gross to the subtle will include an introduction to the energetic anatomy of the nadis (subtle nerve channels) and the vayus (subtle ‘winds’). We will also be covering the foundational study of Ayurveda.
The Asana Labs will continue with learning about the detail of the poses and experiencing them firsthand. In Experiential Anatomy, we will explore the anatomy of breathing and the autonomic nervous system (in particular the sympathetic and parasympathetic nervous system).
This module advances us along the path of the Art of Teaching by focusing on skills such as balancing observation and communication, all while guiding the practice and holding space for a group.
The transition from being an ‘instructor’ of yoga to being a ‘teacher’ is one that requires a great deal of practice and skill, as one learns how to see the people on the mat and offer information to deepen their experience. This is supported with a focus on one’s own practice and sadhana.
This final module includes additional focus on the subtle, with an introduction to the chakra system as well as the use of mudra.
The emphasis of the module will be on applying all of the ‘art of teaching’ skills to evaluated teaching practicums, the ethics of being a yoga teacher, aspects of the business of yoga as well as the new skills of teaching in an online context. Trainees will be submitting videoed teaching segments for feedback, as well as in-person group teaching with one-to-one feedback sessions with the trainers.
The text, audio and video content in this interactive platform allows trainees to learn at their own pace and to have the flexibility to review and revisit material. Having time to learn the theory underpinning the areas of study, then to practice it at home, develops a foundation of understanding for what will then be covered in the in-person content. Access to the online learning platform is for a period of 12 months.
These in-person online sessions will include subject areas such as: Yoga Philosophy, Anatomy & Movement, and Living Your Yoga. Two in-person sessions on Zoom will take place prior to the dates for the in-studio sessions. The Zooms will be in various formats, including break-out rooms.
This final session is intentionally organised to follow up one week after the in-studio content, allowing time to integrate the content and complete homework. This session will include a group talk, break-out rooms and a group practice.
In two successive days (10 hours in total) we will meet as a group in the yoga studio.
